Ward staff are key to a successful breakfast service
When
ward staff are made responsible for the food needs of patients it is less likely that food is
returned uneaten to the kitchen. In some hospitals food assistants were nominated to take the lead
role in feeding patients. They ensure that patients requiring help are given assistance and that
food intake is monitored.
Ward staff, responsible for serving breakfast can adjust the product offer. For example offering cereals that patients are used to eating at home.
Protected mealtimes:
Protected mealtimes mean no disturbance while patients are having their meals. No drug and ward rounds, cleaning or non urgent health activities should be scheduled during meal times. The nurses, catering staff and volunteers will be available to help serve the food and give assistance to patients who need help.
The
red tray system means serving food for malnourished patients on red,
or any different colour of tray. This allows staff to easily recognize who needs help at
mealtimes and does not compromise the dignity of the patient.
